The biggest issue for all of us who pay for car insurance and have to pay higher premiums because there are so many uninsured motorist-solution found!
The one thing that we, the drivers in California have in common is, we all have to put gas in order to drive. Therefore, the solution; thanks to a university professor I had (I apologize, I forgot his name)who facilitated this conversation; Pay for liability insurance at the pump, put a $.02 to $.05 per gallon insurance fee when you gas up.
Result, all drivers; legal, undocumented, tourist, guests, foreigners, etc... would pay for insurance as they drive. So cab drivers, truckers, commuters (like me) and others who are on the road longer than others would pay for their fair share of insurance. As well as those who would like to have full coverage can then go out and shop for insurance as we do now, however, without having to pay for liability or uninsured motorist insurance; since we pay for it at the pump.
The insurance companies would not have the argument of hiking up the premiums and we would have the advantage of reduction in premiums and the assurance that all drivers on the road are insured.
Yes, I know that there would have to be in place an agency to manage this process, however, it does not have to be a government agency, it can be one put together by the people as a non profit - non partisan organization.
Pay insurance at the pump and make sure all drivers are insured. A way for the insurance companies to be regulated by the people who put them in business. Think of this concept; where else can it work?
